"Sugar" is a term which may be applied to several types of carbohydrate, most commonly the monosaccharides glucose (found in starch) and fructose (found in fruits, vegetables, and honey), and the disaccharides lactose (a combination of glucose and galactose, found in milk) and sucrose (a combination of glucose and fructose, found in many plants). However, in common usage, "sugar" refers to the refined form of the sucrose found in a plant called sugarcane (or sugar cane). Sugarcane is a type of grass with thick stalks which may grow from six to nineteen feet tall. The plant has been harvested in the area surrounding First Village since the time of Connor and Brigid, and has since been found in various other tropical areas across First Land, the East Isles, and Midds Land. Sugarcane is ground to extract juice, which is then boiled or dried in the sun to create crystalline solids, which may then be broken down into smaller crystals. Some sugar crystals may be further ground into a fine powder, called confectioner's sugar or powdered sugar (which uses corn starch as an anti-caking agent).
Sugar has countless uses, such as a sweetener that may be added to various foods which are already ready to eat or drink (such as cereal, coffee, or tea). It can also be used in baking, making caramel, candy (chocolate, calaveras, mint, qutn candy, pâté de guimauve, etc.), soft drinks, ice cream, kettle corn, rum, sauce, etc. It is also frequently paired with cinnamon. Molasses is a thick substance which is a by-product of processing sugar cane into sugar. It can be used for various purposes such as baking cookies and other things, making steak sauce, rum, etc.
