Olek is the eighth village founded on The Land, in LY 367. It is situated on the north coast of New Isle, at roughly 18° south latitude and 91° west longitude. Its population as of the 905 census was 16,817 humans. Its first Chief Councillor (905-907) was Luanne Seabreeze. Its current Chief Councillor (908-present) is Jared Localpride.
Olek was the fourth village to be founded during the period of rapid expansion following the founding of Ship, which lasted between 361 and 380. It is a primarily agricultural community, its best-known crop being basil tomatoes (which were first discovered when Olek was settled). The village's most prominent historical figure was Lyta, who created the Land's first circus in 564. Olek is also known as the birthplace of the unofficial holiday "Ice Cream Day," which began in 819. The port village is also home to one of First Nation's naval bases, the only one in the East Isles.
People who live in Olek are referred to collectively as "Olekki," the singular male form being "Olekko" and female form being "Olekka." (It is thought that the differing terms for male and female citizens may have been one factor in the decision by the citizens of Shipsister to choose a similar style of designation, a few years later.)
