Flutterbies are an insect which exists in three stages. The youngest stage is the larva, also known as a caterpillar. In the next stage, it becomes a pupa, when it enters a chrysalis it has made for itself. Eventually it emerges when it reaches the final stage, the imago. (This metamorphosis also takes place for moths.) The name "flutterby" is derived from the fact that the insects, in their imago stage, are always "fluttering by." Curiously, they are known to exist on Earth, where they are called "butterflies," though how they came by that name there is unknown. There are many species of flutterby on The Land, though the only one definitively known to also exist on Earth is the Monarch flutterby. One which is definitively known not to exist on Earth is the Catermander.
